Noida double murder case (Aarushi – Hemraj Murder Case)

The case received heavy media coverage and has remained unsolved despite considerable efforts by several law enforcement agencies.

Aarushi, 14, was discovered dead with her throat slit in her parents Nupur Talwar and Rajesh Talwar’s Noida residence on May 16, 2008. A day later, the body of domestic help Hemraj was discovered on the terrace of the three-storey apartment.

The police suspected insider involvement in the case as the Talwars’ flat had three-tier security, which was difficult to breach. Suspicion initially fell on the family’s live-in manservant Hemraj, who was missing. Noida police declared him the prime suspect. However the following day, following a trail of blood in the Talwar home, police found the dead body of Hemraj on the terrace.

On 23 May 2008, exactly after a week of disorganized investigation, Dr. Rajesh Talwar was arrested after enough evidence was gathered, including the ‘strenuous cover-up’ attempts by the dentist.

The Talwars tried every move they could, also tried to influence the doctor who performed the post-mortem on Aarushi, But could not manage to escape after all.

On 17th Oct 2013 CBI says Rajesh and Nupur Talwar guilty of killing daughter and servant. CBI officer tells court that Aarushi, Hemraj were killed by the Talwars because Aarushi and Hemraj were found in objectionable position.


Tandoor Kand (Tandoor Murder Case)

Victim of Tandoor murder case – Naina Sahni

Naina was the wife of a former youth congress leader, Sushil Sharma, and was believed to have an unlawful relationship with Matloob Karim, an old friend of hers. Sushil Sharma objected to his wife Naina Sahni’s friendship with Matloob Karim. Matloob and Naina were classmates and fellow Congress workers. Sushil suspected Naina of having an illicit relationship with Matloob.

On the night of 2 July 1995, Sushil came home and saw Naina talking on the phone and consuming alcohol. Naina on seeing Sushil hung up. Sushil redialed the phone to find Matloob on the other end. Enraged he fatally shot Naina. He took the body to a restaurant called Bagiya and tried to dispose it off with the restaurant manager, Keshav Kumar. The body was chopped into pieces and put in a Tandoor (clay oven) to burn. Smoke emanating from the tandoor caught the attention of patrolling constables.Police arrested Keshav Kumar but Sharma managed to flee. He surrendered on July 10, 1995.

The second Postmortem was conducted by a board of Doctor,s headed by Prof T.D Dogra of AIIMS, the two bullets were recovered on second postmortem from Head and Neck region which were missed on first postmortem. She was killed by firearm bullet injuries.

Sushil Sharma who murdered his wife Naina Sahni

On 8 October 2013, the court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment because Sharma doesn’t have a criminal antecedent and it is not a crime against society, but it is a crime committed by the accused due to strained personal relationship with his wife.

Neeraj Grover Murder Case:

Neeraj Grover was a television executive working for Synergy Adlabs, a Mumbai based production house.  He was found dead in May 2008; a crime for which actress Maria Susairaj and her boyfriend Lieutenant M.L. Jerome Mathew were arrested.

Neeraj’s body was cut in pieces with a knife purchased for the purpose, transported to another suburb in gunny bags, where the corpse was set on fire.

According to news reports on Maria’s confession:

Neeraj visited Maria’s apartment on the 6th of May 2008 to help her settle in. At the same time, Mathew called her up and got upset to hear a male voice in background. When Maria told Mathew that Neeraj had come over to help her, Jerome asked Maria not to allow Neeraj to stay overnight. Mathew at that time was living in Kochi. However, he took a flight and came to Mumbai the next day without telling Maria. He reached her apartment at 07:30. Maria opened the door and Mathew went straight into the bedroom to find Neeraj naked in the room. As per media and police reports, the two men had argument and then engaged in a physical fight. Mathew grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Neeraj, who died on the spot.

They both then took the dead body to the kitchen and chopped it into several pieces, stuffing them into the bags Maria had earlier bought. While many media outlets reported that Neeraj’s body had been chopped into 300 pieces.

Maria borrowed a car from her friend and dumped the bags in the vehicle’s boot whilst the building security guard watched them load the car. They drove towards Manor & set body on fire in a jungle near Amgaon village in Manor. After burning the dead body, they returned to Mumbai the same night.

She accidentally answered a call on Neeraj Grover’s mobile while she was pulling it out of her denim pocket to see who the caller was. She had kept Neeraj’s mobile with her after the murder. Although she immediately disconnected the call, police were able to trace the location at which the call was answered. This turned out to be a key lead for police as Maria.

Maria Monica Susairaj was found not guilty of the killing, but guilty of destroying evidence and was sentenced to a maximum three years’ imprisonment. She was released the following day with time served. Jerome Mathew was found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting murder and of destroying evidence. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the killing, and 3 years for destroying evidence. The court has also fined Maria and Mathew 50,000, to be paid to Neeraj Grover’s family.

Jessica Lal Murder Case:

Jessica Lal, a Delhi based model was shot dead at around 2 am on 30 April 1999. Dozens of witnesses pointed to Siddharth Vashisht, also known as Manu Sharma, the son of Venod Sharma, a wealthy and influential Congress-nominated Member of Parliament from Haryana, as the murderer.

Jessica was working as a celebrity barmaid when she was approached by Manu Sharma and his friends. Manu, son of an influential politician of congress party, offered her Rs. 1000 and demanded for more liquor. When Jessica denied the demand of liquor explaining him the rules of court for not selling alcohol after 12.30 AM, Manu went furious and fired a shot from his pistol aiming Jessica’s head which resulted in her instant death.

Following intense media and public pressure, the prosecution appealed and the Delhi High Court conducted proceedings on a fast track with daily hearings conducted over 25 days. The trial court judgment was overturned, and Manu Sharma was found guilty of having murdered Jessica. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 20 December 2006.
